Peregrines hunt from above and, after sighting their prey, drop into a steep, swift dive, or stooop, that can top 200 miles an hour.Formerly called the "duck hawk", peregrines are formidable hunters that prey on other birds (and bats) in mid-flight.People have trained falcons for hunting for over a thousand years, and the peregrine falcon was always one of the most prized birds.The name "peregrine" means wanderer, and the peregrine falcon has one of the longest migrations of any North American bird.It is found on all continents except Antarctica and on many oceanic islands. The peregrine falcon is one of the most widespread birds in the world.Peregrines were reintroduced on the islands in the 1980s and as of 2013, there are 45 active peregrine falcons on the eight Channel Islands.
